Safety Tips For Concrete Cutting

construction safety plan

Concrete cutting is all about safety!

Any construction job from drilling to street paving come with their own risks and precautions.  Concrete cutting is no different and the workers that are operating the cutting equipment have a set of guidelines to follow.  Contractors at Concrete Visions have to learn to minimize risks so that everyone involved is kept safe.

Always Wear Protective Gear

This might be obvious for some, but it is crucial to wear protective gear while involved in any concrete cutting project.  This goes goes for the cutter as well anyone around running machinery.  Workers should wear goggles to protect  their eyes from flying particles. If you are cutting for a long period of time, it is recommended to wear some type of respiratory protection to avoid inhaling particles.  Protective gloves and footwear specifically steel toe boots should be worn during concrete cutting.  Avoid wearing nice or loose clothing while operating a machine because they could be caught in the equipment.

Prepare Cutting Lines and Monitor Rotation

Planning is key to avoiding any onsite accidents while concrete cutting.  Mark your lines before you cut to ensure accuracy and go slow while operating the blade.  Trying to speed up the process will just cause an unnecessary accident.  Make sure to pay attention when you are changing the angle of your saw and stay away from that area when cutting.

Learn How To Handle Interruptions

As with any line of work, interruptions will occur during the day and you will have other responsibilities to take care of suddenly.  If you are interrupted during cutting, remember to turn off your machine completely and set it aside in a safe area.  The one thing you want to avoid is a running saw on the ground!
