The Benefits of GPR for Roadway Inspection

Roadway Inspections

GPR is a great tool for conducting roadway inspections.

As construction techniques have advanced and developed the need for ground penetrating radar (GPR) has grown hand in hand. GPR works by using electromagnetic fields to show what is underground by analyzing dielectric material and detecting structures and underground properties. This technology is a boon to construction as it allows workers to identify objects underground that could serve as a threat to workers, utilities, and equipment.

Accurate Imaging

Perhaps the most significant advantage to GPR imaging is that it is able to provide the user with a precise image of buried objects. Unlike many other alternatives, it can give the user orientation to the depth and orientation of buried objects as it analyzes different depths in slices. Many options are not able to offer the same levels of data, making them less suited to the needs of modern infrastructure.

More Cost Effective

As an alternative to core drilling, GPR is a cost-effective way to prevent the damage that a drilled core sample can cause. Often, highway engineers use a drilled core sample to test the different layers and thickness, but this can be time-consuming, expensive and lead to long term damage. The gaps that core samples make can be penetrated by water and air leading to early deterioration of the concrete or asphalt.

Stay on Schedule

When working on construction projects time is often of the essence. Not only do other methods take longer to perform and process, but they can leave room for error. GPR allows you a fast and accurate picture of what is underground so that you’re not dealing with unpleasant surprises or wait times.

Safety

When a mistake happens, and equipment hits an unexpected object, the results can be devastating. Along with damage to equipment and the site, running the wrong thing can result in injury and loss of life. Rebar and tension wires, for example, can snap and put everyone nearby in immediate danger. Having as clear a picture of what you’re working with is critical for everyone involved.

GPR Services from Concrete Visions

Concrete Visions has over 12 years of experience and expertise in concrete scanning and we know how to detect any problems lurking beneath the surface. We use ground penetrating radar accurately and expertly and are familiar with many other methods that can be used when appropriate like concrete x-ray and electromagnetic conductivity. We are also very familiar with the latest construction safety techniques and train all of our workers to do their work quickly, accurately, and safely.  If you would like to learn more about how we can help you, give us a call at (410) 766-2210 or visit us online.
