How Does GPR Work?

GPR

If you’re curious as to how GPR works, the basics are laid out for you here.

GPR or ground-penetrating radar is used frequently by construction crews. No matter what kind of projects are being worked out, ground-penetrating radar helps solve the mystery of what lies beneath the ground. Using GPR is especially helpful when utilities are located underground, and you need to know the exact location before cutting into the ground. GPR is powerful that it can even show whats inside of concrete infrastructure before concrete cutting or drilling occurs. If you’re curious as to how GPR works, the basics are laid out for you here.

The Basics

Ground-penetrating radar is an advanced function of technology that utilizes high-frequency radio signals that are transmitted into the ground. After the radar is transmitted into the ground, reflected signals are returned to the receiver which displays an image of the utility that is located underground. As the computer measures the amount of time it takes for the image to be displayed, the depth of the utility or object is calculated, allowing the technician to know just how deep it is.

The Information

When it comes to GPR and concrete, technicians are most often searching for rebar, conduits, and post-tension cables that are located underground or in concrete infrastructure. The thickness of the concrete must first be determined. This makes it easier to map out the location of objects that are embedded into the concrete.
