What’s The Difference Between GPR and Concrete X-Ray?


There are several differences between GPR and concrete x-ray technology that you need to know before beginning your project.

When it comes to underground utility locating, there are two options that will help you determine what exactly it is that you’re dealing with. Knowing what types of utilities are being stored underground before you begin any kind of concrete cutting or drilling is necessary for many reasons. By using GPR, you are ensuring the safety of your workers as well as the integrity of the infrastructure itself. X-ray scanning comes with a few drawbacks that you’ll also need to consider. But how do you know which utility locating method to choose? There are several differences between GPR and concrete x-ray technology that you need to know before beginning your project.

Ground-Penetrating Radar

Ground-penetrating radar (or GPR, as it is usually called) is a geophysical method used to display images of what is underground to the surface. A positive aspect of GPR is that the scanning process usually takes less time than the x-ray scanning process. Most technicians receive the images they need by accessing one side of a concrete structure in about an hour and a half. Another great thing about the ground-penetrating radar process is that it is not harmful to people who are nearby or using the equipment. GPR also generally costs less than other concrete scanning methods.

Concrete X-Ray Scanning

Sometimes you will need a definitive idea as to whether you’re drilling into an object that is rebar or conduit, and x-ray technology can help you do that. Since the images with x-ray concrete scanning are so clear, there’s nothing left to interpretation. Some drawbacks are that the x-ray technology is radioactive and can pose a threat to anyone working with the equipment or in the area. X-ray scanning does not provide the depth of penetration that GPR provides, so you need to determine just how far you’ll need to see into the infrastructure. Also, the x-ray process takes far longer than the GPR scanning process, about five to six hours.
