How Do Fireblock and Firestop Differ?

Firestop

What’s the difference between Firestop and Fireblock? We aim to find out.

In every construction zone, there are a number of safety hazards that need to be accounted for, one of which is fire. When you are considering keeping your property safe, an important question to ask yourself if you are using the best product or not. While the phrasing “firestopping” is used interchangeably with other phrases like “fireblocking” these terms are meant to describe two different objectives. That being said, let’s explore the differences between Fireblock and Firestop.

Fireblock

Fireblock uses a few basic materials which distinguish it from Firestop. Fireblock uses lumber, gypsum board, structural wood panels, blankets of glass, or cement fiberboard. The primary function of Fireblock is to stop the fire or hot gasses that could cause a fire. Fireblock uses these materials to smother the fire and keep it from spreading to other areas.

Firestop

Firestop became more popularized in the 1980’s and is typically a more “well-defined” product. Firestop uses products like mortars, silicone, fibers and rubber compounds to seal units and keep fire from spreading.

The Same Result Different Methods

Firestop and Fireblock are the similar products with different ways of achieving the end result. The end result is the safety and protection of your home or business during construction. Surprisingly flammable products can be used to help smother fired which is how Fireblock works. Fire is brought to life with oxygen which is why if you are ever trying to light a fire it is important to blow gently on it to catch. Fireblock implements different tools to smother the fire than Firestop.

Firestop consistently has better results however and many companies are taking the leap and educating their employees on installing it. Proper installation of firestop products is essential to making sure they work properly to protect your home or business. At Concrete Visions, most employees have worked with firestop for over five years ensuring the highest quality in protection.
