Advantages of GPR Over Electromagnetic Location

GPR

Using GPR has many advantages over using electromagnetic location.

Electromagnetic Location and Ground Penetrating Radar are both techniques that are used for locating underground utilities in a non-invasive way. Electromagnetic, otherwise known as EM, uses a transponder that transmits AC current into a steel pipe while ground penetrating radar, or GPR, uses a transmitter and receiver. While both get the job done, there are some advantages to using GPR over EM, including its greater reliability. Read on to learn more about these advantages and more interesting facts about locating underground utilities.

Subsurface Utility Engineering

Subsurface utility engineering, or SUE, is all about utility coordination and mapping underground utilities. The main benefit of this application is that GPR produces better imaging. Although the technology requires more training, it provides better imaging regardless of composition. GPR checks for underground disturbances, which means that it detects lines whether they are metallic or not. With EM, that method requires that the lines be made of an electrically conductive material because it primarily works with an electrical current. The wand-like receiver picks up the electromagnetic field surrounding the utility line, which is then transmitted and traced onto a map for further analysis and reference.

Other Subsurface Imaging

Because GPR measures the difference between density, it can be used to detect more than just utility lines. Industry professionals also use GPR to detect large rocks, tanks, and even void spaces. In applications like road and bridge construction, it’s an essential tool because it provides important information about soil density and is helpful in determining whether a foundation is sound or not for construction. In the law enforcement industry, GPR has been used for various forensic analysis. It’s also used in archeological applications. As the technology will continue to progress, it will produce signals that can be more accurately interpreted for use in subsurface utility engineering and other industries.
