Winter Construction Safety Tips

Stay safe while concrete cutting and drilling during the winter.

Construction safety is important every day of the year and throughout every season. It’s especially important during the winter when ice and snow can wreak havoc on traditional construction safety methods. Here are some of our best winter safety tips to protect you and your construction crew on the job site.

Quick Winter Safety Tips

When emphasizing construction safety in the winter months, remember that weather conditions can rapidly deteriorate with very cold temperatures, high winds, snow, hail, and wintry mix. To maintain the highest level of construction safety possible in the winter months, you should always:

  • Reduce exposure to the elements whenever possible. If you are working on big tasks that require extended outdoor work, try to break them up into smaller chunks so that workers can move indoors relatively frequently.
  • Monitor the weather so that you don’t plan job sites on days where there are going to be high winds or snowstorms. Keep an eye on the weather every day and also pay attention to advance forecasts. The National Weather Service will have advisories that cover outdoor safety, so you should check them often to make sure you aren’t putting workers at risk.
  • Always make a warm space where workers can go to get out of the cold, whether it’s a formal break room or a small trailer with portable heaters in it. If you are in charge on the construction site, make sure that workers are taking breaks frequently enough (and more frequently if conditions are bad).
  • Require every worker to have the right construction safety equipment and uniform for cold weather. They should wear thick-soled boots, heavy coats, thick gloves, and warm hats. Ideally, the winter clothing should be moisture-wicking to carry sweat away from the skin and increase warmth and comfort.
  • Inspect each work site every day before getting started to identify any potential hazards. A 24-hour period can cause surprising changes, so take your time when inspecting.
