This summer, keep these concrete safety tips in mind to ensure your personal safety while at work.

When working with concrete, there are some safety concerns that you need to be aware of on a daily basis. In the warmer months, construction projects are well underway. In addition to the proper attire and eyewear, there are many ways you can protect yourself from the dangers of working with concrete. This summer, keep these concrete safety tips in mind to ensure your personal safety while at work.

What to Know

OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) has many regulations and laws in place that were created to protect the rights, health, and safety of construction workers all over the United States. When working with concrete, employees must wear gloves and safety glasses. In addition to the proper protective attire, there must also be an eyewash station available. Having the correct equipment available is not just helpful; it is necessary when working with concrete.

Dry Concrete

The main concern when working with dry concrete is the dust that comes with it. When drilling or excavating, concrete dust is inevitable, and it can cause some health risks. Without the proper protective attire, concrete dust can irritate your eyes, nose, throat, and your upper respiratory system. Also, while working with concrete, you must also be aware of your body. Make sure you are employing proper lifting techniques to avoid long-term injury. Use tools and machines that will make your tasks simpler and safer rather than trying to do it all yourself.

The Risks

When dust contacts the skin, it may cause irritations like rashes that itch or burn. Breathing in silica, a main component of concrete, can lead to much worse problems later one, even lung cancer. To avoid contact with concrete dust, flush your eyes after working with concrete, use soap and water to thoroughly wash skin, and wear a respirator to decrease dust inhalation. Also, remember to eat and drink in an area that is dust-free to avoid consuming concrete dust.
